A viral video is putting Nigeria's South-East security checkpoints back in the spotlight — and thousands of commuters say it's about time.

The man's blunt comparison has struck a nerve: "It feels like a war zone." And the numbers back up the frustration. Checks show that from Onitsha to Enugu Express, a distance of about 105 kilometres, travellers are confronted with over 25 security checkpoints — comprising the Army, Police, Road Safety, and NDLEA personnel — averaging a checkpoint after about every three kilometres. As one report bluntly put it, "in war zones, it is not like that."

Nigerians traveling from the South-West into the South-East have long voiced the same complaint — endless stop-and-go delays that turn a simple road trip into an ordeal. Some travellers say the constant checks have changed their entire relationship with going home.

One Lagos resident described avoiding the route altogether: "I live in Lagos and I cannot afford to go through the several roadblocks between Lagos and Asaba and then face the worst ones between Onitsha and Mgbidi, my hometown... Maybe we will begin to visit home when the situation improves."

Commercial drivers who ply the route regularly paint an even more troubling picture — describing an unofficial "understanding" that keeps traffic moving at each stop, raising longstanding concerns about extortion layered on top of security fatigue.

Security officials, for their part, maintain the checkpoints are part of ongoing operations to tackle insecurity and separatist agitation in the region — but for everyday travellers, the sheer density of stops is fueling growing anger and exhaustion.
