President Bola Tinubu just made a major intervention — and Nigerians online are not holding back their opinions.

Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately unfreeze the bank accounts of the Osun State Government by returning to court to vacate the freezing order, saying the action could affect public confidence ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

In a personally signed statement, the President didn't hold back on his feelings either. "It has come to my notice that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) obtained a court order on August 5, 2026, freezing the accounts of the Osun State Government," he said, adding that he was "deeply embarrassed" — not by the EFCC exercising its powers, but by the timing of the move.

Here's the twist: Tinubu insists he's not interfering with the anti-graft agency's independence. He stressed he wasn't questioning the EFCC's powers or independence, and had consistently allowed anti-corruption agencies to operate without political interference since taking office. But he drew a clear line at election season. "Osun State is only a few days away from its governorship election. Therefore, nothing ought to be done to create the impression that the EFCC or any other federal agency is being used to influence the electoral process," he said.

So what sparked the freeze in the first place? The dispute traces back to Governor Ademola Adeleke accusing the EFCC of placing the state's salary account on a "Post No Debit" restriction, and alleging the commission was planning to freeze accounts belonging to other senior government officials.

Tinubu has since personally called Governor Adeleke to inform him of the directive.
