A jaw-dropping tale of deception has rocked the National Assembly, as a Lagos businessman narrated how he was allegedly swindled out of ₦400 million by a man posing as a top government official.

Businessman Gbenga Collins told the House of Representatives that he was defrauded of ₦400 million after paying the money to the purported Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), Adeniyi Adeyemi, for a contract to renovate and furnish what was presented to him as the agency's official residence.

And here's the part that will leave you stunned — Collins says he had every reason to believe it was real. He told the committee that he believed the PFIPC was a genuine Federal Government institution because Adeyemi operated from an office in the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, moved with security personnel and official vehicles bearing government number plates, and received visitors in what appeared to be an authentic government office.

Collins said Adeyemi sent an official car with a Federal Government registration number to pick him up from the airport, and he even personally toured the property he was told would become the agency chief's residence.

He said money was paid, but the purported PFIPC chief eventually stopped answering his calls — leaving Collins to seek legal advice, which is when he was first told he'd been scammed. His lawyer petitioned the EFCC in November 2025.

The scandal doesn't stop there. Following the testimony, lawmakers on the committee expressed alarm over how the alleged fake agency managed to obtain official Federal Government vehicles and registration plates — prompting the panel to summon the Corps Marshal of the FRSC to explain.

As for Adeyemi himself? He couldn't appear before the committee because he remains in police custody under a subsisting court order, the committee chairman confirmed.
