Relief and celebration in Ogun State — all seven students abducted from Gateway ICT Polytechnic have been rescued alive, and not a single naira was paid in ransom!
Governor Dapo Abiodun confirmed the rescue of the seven abducted students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, by combined efforts of security personnel, during a news conference at the state secretariat in Abeokuta.
The students had been in captivity for about a week after being abducted by suspected armed men on July 29 at a private hostel located along Paraga Road in Ipara-Remo.
Here's how the daring rescue unfolded: five victims were rescued during the first phase of the operation and reunited with their families after receiving medical attention, while the remaining two were rescued in a subsequent operation involving a police helicopter and ground forces.
It wasn't without danger, though. One of the rescued students sustained a gunshot wound during the incident and was immediately taken for medical treatment, and has since been stabilised.
And the manhunt isn't over yet — two suspected kidnappers have already been arrested and are in police custody, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang, with operatives still combing the forest.
The Governor didn't hold back his message to criminal gangs operating in the state: reaffirming his administration's unwavering commitment to ensuring that kidnappers and other criminal elements have no hiding place anywhere in Ogun State.
The operation brought together an impressive coalition — the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Armed Forces, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun Corps, local vigilantes and hunters — all working in sync to bring the students home.
