Why El-Rufai Quietly Relocated to Egypt — Ex-Kaduna Governor Reveals Life With His 96-Year-Old Mother After Power

From Governor to Retirement Abroad: El-Rufai Explains His Move to Egypt

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El‑Rufai has revealed that he now spends most of his time living in Egypt, alongside part of his family and his 96-year-old mother.
The former governor made the revelation while reflecting on his decades of service in Nigeria’s public sector and his life after leaving office.
El-Rufai, who played a major role in Nigeria’s government for more than two decades, said he has now stepped away from active public service and is embracing a quieter life.
“I served as Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises from 1999 to 2003, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory from 2003 to 2007, and I was elected governor of Kaduna State twice from 2015 to 2023. Now I am retired and mainly reside in Egypt with part of my family and my 96-year-old mother,” he said.
During his time as Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, El-Rufai played a key role in Nigeria’s early privatization reforms under the Fourth Republic.
He later served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, overseeing major administrative reforms and infrastructure projects in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
El-Rufai eventually became governor of Kaduna State, where he served two consecutive terms between 2015 and 2023, making him one of the most influential political figures in Northern Nigeria during that period.
Now retired from executive office, the former governor says he is focusing more on family life while reflecting on the many years he spent shaping Nigeria’s political and administrative landscape.
His move to Egypt signals a new phase in his life, away from the intense spotlight of Nigerian politics.
