Leah Sharibu Reportedly Married to Three Boko Haram Fighters in Captivity
Advocate Reveals Details of Leah Sharibu’s Life in Boko Haram Captivity
Human rights advocate Gideon Para-Mallam has shared new claims about the life of abducted schoolgirl Leah Sharibu, who has remained in captivity since her kidnapping by Boko Haram in 2018.
Sharibu was among the 110 schoolgirls abducted from the Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi in Yobe State, Nigeria, during a raid by Boko Haram militants on February 19, 2018.
While most of the girls were later released, Leah remained in captivity after reportedly refusing to renounce her Christian faith.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Para-Mallam, who heads the Gideon and Funmi Para‑Mallam Peace Foundation, claimed that Sharibu had been forced into multiple marriages while in captivity.
According to him, Sharibu was first given to an older Boko Haram member shortly after her abduction and later had a child with him. After some time, she reportedly separated from the man.
Para-Mallam further alleged that she was later married to another insurgent commander who was killed in December 2022 during clashes between factions of Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
He added that following the commander’s death, Sharibu was taken by another fighter and has since had another child.
“These details suggest she may have had three husbands while in captivity,” Para-Mallam said.
The activist also called on the government of Nigeria and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intensify efforts to secure her release.
Leah Sharibu’s continued captivity has remained a major symbol of the ongoing insurgency in northeastern Nigeria and the plight of victims of extremist violence.
