Impeachment Drama: Kwankwasiyya Defends Kano Deputy Governor With Approval Documents
Documents Show Governor Approved ₦1.1bn Allocation — Kwankwasiyya
The Kwankwasiyya Movement in Kano has released documents it says prove that the controversial ₦1.1 billion fund at the center of impeachment allegations against the state’s deputy governor was approved by the governor.
The Kano State House of Assembly recently issued an impeachment notice to Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the Deputy Governor of Kano State, accusing him of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
The impeachment notice, reportedly signed by 38 out of 40 lawmakers, alleges financial impropriety linked to funds handled during his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government and in his current role.
However, the Kwankwasiyya Movement has rejected the allegations, presenting documents that suggest the ₦1.1 billion allocation for water supply and drug procurement across the 44 local government areas of the state was approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
According to the documents, the request for funding originated from the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Kano chapter, which sought financial support to address water shortages and provide medical supplies.
The proposal reportedly recommended the release of ₦25 million per local government area, totaling ₦1.1 billion, from the State/Local Government Joint Account.
Kwankwasiyya leaders argue that the documents clearly show the deputy governor acted within official procedures and with the governor’s approval.
Meanwhile, political analysts say the impeachment move comes amid growing political tension in Kano following Governor Yusuf’s reported defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the All Progressives Congress.
Under Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, the deputy governor has two weeks to respond to the allegations. If lawmakers find his defense unsatisfactory, the Assembly may proceed to establish an investigative panel to examine the claims.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the state government were still ongoing at the time of reporting.
