FIFA Slams Door on Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup Dream — DR Congo Confirmed, Nigeria Officially Out

Heartbreak for Nigeria: FIFA Confirms DR Congo, Super Eagles Crash Out of 2026 World Cup Race

Nigeria’s hopes of playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have suffered a major setback after FIFA confirmed the final teams for the inter-confederation play-off tournament.
The announcement effectively shuts the door on the Nigeria national football team, who had hoped their protest would overturn the result of their controversial defeat to DR Congo national football team during the Confederation of African Football play-offs in November 2025.
Nigeria had drawn 1-1 with DR Congo before losing on penalties in the decisive tie. Following the match, the Nigeria Football Federation filed an official petition, claiming that DR Congo allegedly fielded ineligible players during the encounter.
The protest raised hopes among Nigerian fans that the result might be overturned, potentially reinstating the Super Eagles into the inter-continental play-offs.
However, FIFA’s latest communication to journalists confirmed the final list of six teams that will compete for the remaining World Cup slots.
The teams include Bolivia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, and Suriname.
The tournament will determine the final two countries that will join the expanded 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Notably, Nigeria’s name was absent from the official lineup, signaling that the football governing body has upheld the original result of the play-off tie.
The development has sparked disappointment among Nigerian football fans, many of whom had hoped the country could still secure a place through the appeal process.
With the decision now effectively confirmed, the Super Eagles will miss the 2026 World Cup unless an unexpected development occurs before the play-off tournament begins.
