Nigerian football just entered a whole new financial era — and clubs are already gearing up for the biggest payday in the league's history!
Under a newly approved structure, NPFL champions of the 2026/27 season will pocket a record-breaking ₦1 billion, while the runners-up will earn ₦500 million and the third-placed side will receive ₦300 million. The announcement came from National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko, following a high-level strategic meeting between the NSC and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in Abuja.
To put this in perspective — this isn't just an increase, it's an explosion. NPFL champions received just ₦100 million during the 2022/23 season, a figure that later rose to ₦210 million in subsequent campaigns — meaning this new prize represents nearly a 5x jump from the most recent payout, and a staggering 10x jump from just a few seasons ago.
It's not only about the trophy money either. The minimum monthly wage for NPFL players has now been set at ₦2 million, a move aimed at improving player welfare. NSC and NFF leadership also agreed that maximum club licensing requirements — not merely minimum standards — must be strictly enforced going forward, with Dikko declaring: "Professional football must be run professionally. If strict enforcement means fewer clubs qualify initially, then so be it."
The timing sets up a mouth-watering title race too. Nigeria's top flight resumes for the 2026/27 season on the August 27–29 weekend, with defending champions Rangers International — Nigeria's most successful club, having claimed their ninth NPFL title last season — returning to defend their crown against rivals now hungrier than ever for a shot at history-making money.
Bigger prize money. Stricter licensing. A wage floor for players. Nigerian football is clearly trying to professionalize fast — and clubs know it.
