“I Knew We Were Both AS But Still Married Him” – Eucharia Anunobi Opens Up on Marriage, Abandonment and Losing Her Son to Sickle Cell Disease

Veteran Nollywood actress and evangelist Eucharia Anunobi has revealed why she decided to marry her former husband Charles Ekwu, even though they both knew they were AS genotype carriers before getting married.
Speaking during an interview on the The Honest Bunch Podcast, the actress explained that she initially wanted to end the relationship after discovering their genotype compatibility because of the risks associated with Sickle Cell Disease.
However, according to her, her ex-husband convinced her to continue the relationship and assured her that he would stand by her if any health challenges arose.
The couple eventually got married and welcomed a son, Raymond Ekwu. Unfortunately, doctors later diagnosed the child with sickle cell disorder (SS genotype), marking the beginning of what Anunobi described as one of the most painful periods of her life.
She alleged that after their son’s diagnosis, her husband became distant and eventually abandoned the family. According to the actress, she bore the financial burden of raising their child alone, paying rent, medical bills, and other household expenses.
Anunobi claimed that on November 26, 2006, when their son was four years old, her husband moved out of their home, saying he could not cope with raising a child living with sickle cell disorder. She further alleged that he never reached out afterward to check on their son.
Despite the challenges, the actress said she devoted herself fully to caring for the boy. She explored medical options, including the possibility of a bone marrow transplant abroad, but eventually returned to Nigeria and focused on carefully managing her son’s health.
According to her, strict routines and careful monitoring helped stabilize his condition for several years.
Sadly, the actress lost her son Raymond Ekwu on August 22, 2017, after complications during a medical procedure. The loss remains one of the most heartbreaking experiences of her life.
Today, Anunobi continues to speak openly about her experience, using her story to raise awareness about genotype compatibility, the realities of Sickle Cell Disease, and the importance of careful medical and marital decisions.
