A fresh political controversy has erupted after Professor Leo Obinna publicly questioned why Sunday Igboho has regained freedom while Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention.
Speaking on February 25, 2026, the lecturer from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike praised traditional ruler Lawrence Agubuzu for boldly calling on President Bola Tinubu to grant Kanu unconditional release.
According to Obinna, Agubuzu’s position reflects widespread sentiments across the Southeast, where many believe Kanu’s continued detention raises serious concerns about fairness and equal treatment under the law.
“Why the Difference?”
Drawing a direct comparison, Obinna argued that Igboho was accused of similar separatist-related offenses but has since been freed — and is even reportedly being considered for high traditional honors in Yorubaland.
Meanwhile, Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), remains incarcerated.
“Sunday Igboho committed similar alleged offenses as Kanu. He has been pardoned… Meanwhile, Kanu continues to languish in prison,” Obinna stated.
His remarks have reignited heated debates nationwide over alleged regional bias, political considerations, and consistency in the application of justice.
Calls for Equal Treatment
Obinna stressed that in systems where justice is applied consistently, individuals facing comparable charges are treated similarly. He described Kanu’s prolonged detention as unjustified and insisted that Agubuzu’s intervention was both courageous and necessary.
The statement adds to growing political pressure on the Tinubu administration, as conversations around national unity, separatist agitation, and judicial equity continue to dominate headlines.
